Thank U for that! Wonderfully written!!! I don't like wearing the thali at all. As someone who prefers to wear dainty, light jewelry, it came as rude shock to me when I learnt that a thali had to be worn at all times. Seriously, I had no clue. It was no big deal in my household and I married outside and in to a family where the ladies have to uphold.......drums please.......the "tradition". My thali is heavy, huge, and it hurts to wear it around the neck all the freakin time. I read in a book that long time ago both men and women had to wear thalis as per "tradition". Can someone explain to me why the men have stopped wearing it.....yeah right!! Can't be bothered I guess. Anyways, I only wear it to please my in-laws. The latest is that the police is advising ladies to pin their thalis to their blouses to prevent it from being snatched by the chain-snatchers. It sounds ridiculous to me. My husband does not mind....so good for me. We love our platinum rings though!!!

This is just fantastic. A die-hard Madras lover, I lapped up every word.

At the risk of sounding shamelessly self-promoting, I am giving below the link to a piece on Madras I wrote. Do read it if and when you have the time and inclination:

Cheers
Kamini.

hehe.. thrift is the institution upon which south india (- the goltilands, chettinad and gulf colonies) was built.. my father still starts fuming from his ears if he sees me waste water.. i think such attitudes make us responsible consumers.. teach us to differentiate desires from needs..

and no point trying to fight or question nature maami.. women were born to buy irrelevant things.. it is one of their life functions.. it makes them feel secure for some goddamn reason.. i learnt this the hard way when i talked to my mom about selling some of the unused gold items in the house to generate cash.. i saw the relevance of the venerable game of dodgeball right then..

and lol at the euphemistic pun.. andha purse matters pathi me talking :D (it could be some other figure of speech ofc but naanga english missa satta pannathane)

(Eh?What?Been out shopping!)
